Obstacles to Using the Internet Effectively in Schools By Michael Safina
Training • Often teachers have not been trained in how to use the Internet or related technologies (Education via Networks in the European Union [EDUVINET]) . • Veteran teachers
Integration • Teachers find it difficult to integrate the internet into classroom instruction (NetDay, 2001, Finding #1, ¶ 4).
Support • Lack of building leadership and support personnel in this area (Schofield, 2003, Need for substantial technological and pedagogical support, ¶ 1) .
Time • Teachers note that a lack of integration is equally due to a lack of time in the already busy school day (NetDay, 2001, Finding #3, ¶ 1).
Usage • Teachers use the internet as mostly a tool to do research (NetDay, 2001, Finding #2, ¶ 1). • Teachers do not realize the true potential of the internet. • Projects • Communication • Professional Development
Connections • Internet connection is slow and not all computers and rooms have access (NetDay, 2003, p. 4).
Wired • Many schools have limited location access due to their wired infrastructures (Carlitz and Hastings, 2000, The Information Driveway). • No wireless access
Filters and Firewalls • School filters and firewalls prevents access to educationally appropriate sites (NetDay, 2003, p. 3).
