The Cell Cycle An ordered set of events, culminating in cell growth and division into two daughter cells.
Essential Question What are cells made of? What are the functions of cell division? What happens during the cell cycle?
What are the functions of cell division? • Cell division allows organisms to • Grow • Repair • reproduce
G1 phase:Interphase • The formation of cells takes energy! • The time needed by the new cells to replenish their energy causes a "gap". • After cell energy reserves are restored, the cells begin to grow. • This is the longest phase of the cell cycle.
S phase Synthesis means to make. After a period of growth, each cell's original DNA is duplicated in the process of replication.
G2 phase The replication of DNA also takes a lot of energy! The time taken by a cell to build up its energy reserves produces a second "gap".
Mitosis • The process by which the DNA is divided into two identical sets before the cell divides. • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase • Cytokinesis
Prophase • Chromatin coils to form chromosomes, nuclear membrane disappears, and centrioles prepare to move to opposite sides of the cell.
Metaphase • Fibers move the chromosomes to the equator (middle) of the cell.
Anaphase • The centromere of each pair of chromatids divides, separate and are pushed to opposite poles (apart) of the cell by the spindle fibers.
Telophase • All spindle fibers disappear, chromatids unwind and stretch as a nuclear membrane forms around each mass of chromatin.
Cytokinesis: Cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm of a parent cell. The cell pinches together roughly in the center.
Cancer Cancer is a disease of the cell cycle. Some of the body’s cells divide uncontrollably and tumors form.
Chemical Signals tell a cell when to start and stop dividing. (Target cells animation: click on go sign)
Neighboring cells communicate with dividing cells to regulate their growth also. (Normal contact inhibition animation: click on petri dish)
Treating Cancers Cancer treatments include drugs that can stop cancer cells from dividing.
