Short course on Industrial & Organisational Psychology Objectives: • To develop an understanding of people’s behaviour and the nature of work in organisations • To develop an awareness of the practical and applied value of the field. • To learn major theories, concepts and findings in Industrial & Organisational Psychology.

  2. Unit 1: Introduction Definition: “The application of the theories, methods, facts and principles of psychology to people at work” ( Schultz) “ It concerns all aspects of human behaviour, thoughts, feelings and experiences concerning work” ( Arnold et al.)

  3. Research methods in IOP • Questionnaires/ Psychometric tests • ( It assesses attitudes, personality, ability, IQ) • Interviews from individuals to group • Observation • Archival sources ( trends in organisation effectiveness e.g absenteeism, financial account)

  4. Contemporary challenges facing managers • The new environment • Globalization • Knowledge and information explosion • Downsizing • Reengineering • Total quality • Diversity • Ethics and ethical behaviour
