  1. Warm Up • Create a short scenario with someone at your table using at least four of the following “hip” terms of the 1920’s: Crush: to like someone Keen: cool Scram: to leave quickly Ritzy: fancy Screwy: weird Bee’s knee’s: cool Gatecrasher: to attend without paying

  2. 1920’s Women Main Idea: Women began to assert independence, reject traditional values and demand civil rights during the carefree nature of the 1920’s.

  3. Flappers • Flappers were young women rebelling against traditional values • They wore trendy clothes such as above the knee skirts and cut their in short bob’s and dyed it black • This rebelled against the traditional long hair and long skirts

  4. Clashes with the Flappers • Flappers accepted the idea of dating causally • Different than traditional courting for marriage • Churches and schools protested the new ways • Double standard was created • Men were allowed sexual freedom but women were not

  6. Work Changes • New opportunities formed for women • Women worked during WWI but lost the jobs after the men returned • They found “women’s work” jobs instead • Women were not treated equally in the workforce • They were paid less and could not reach manager level

  7. Changing Family • The birth rate declined in the 1920’s • Margaret Sanger created birth control • Life was easier for the house wife due to mass production • Clothes, sliced bread, and canned foods were all purchasable • Marriage became more focused on love and companionship • Used to be out of necessity
