  4. The Acadians • The major French Acadian settlements were how controlled by the English • The French maintained some fishing rights on the north shore

Result of English take over of Acadia • The Acadians had the right to leave their settlements and pledge their allegiance to either the French or the British • Both the French and the English would try to secure the Acadian’s allegiance • The majority the Acadians would choose to remain neutral

Growing Tensions • Remaining neutral was successful for the Acadians for 40 years until the 1750s • The British had become concerned about the number of French settlers as compared to the English settlers in Acadia • The British gave the Acadians two options: Take the oath of allegiance or be deported.

  7. Deportation • In 1755 the Acadians again refused to take the oath of allegiance • The British began to deport the Acadians from their lands and put them aboard British ships • Their homes were burnt and all their property and land was confiscated
