The Fourteenth WMO Congress supported the conclusions of CBS that table-driven code forms (TDCF), with their self-description, flexibility and expandability, were the solution to satisfy the demands of rapidly evolving science and technology WMO Code Migration Plan • Congress noted with satisfaction that CBS had developed a thorough plan for a WMO-wide migration to table-driven code forms (see detail in WMO web site : • http://www.wmo.ch/web/www/documents.html#CodeTables

The Table Driven Codes Forms GRIB/BUFR/CREX • Offer great advantages compared to traditional alphanumeric codes • Self-description, flexibility, expandability, greater precision, packing/compression • For new parameters or new data types, no need to change software, handled via additional table entries (this is fundamental in light of the fast evolution of science and technology - there are regular requests for representation of new data types, metadata, higher resolution (time and space) and higher accuracy) • Expected increase in data quality and data quantity • Coordinates transmitted with reports • Binary nature and packing features

  4. CODE MIGRATION GOAL • Ultimately all observations to be exchanged in BUFR which offers more features than CREX, e.g. quality flags, associated values, packing,. • For some situations however, CREX can be an interim solution. • A BIG CHALLENGE!
