    1. Skcin, Sun Safety & Skin Cancer

    3. Karen Clifford passed away in December, 2005 Ever since, with the support of clinicians at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, her family have been developing the charity Skcin Skcin has acquired an impressive number of associations with clinicians, corporates, charities and MPs Skcin are adamant that skin cancer requires a continuous ongoing national campaign The Background

    4. A fundamental belief that “it won’t happen to me” Lack of education on sun safety & skin cancer A need to gain a greater profile for the disease, it’s the no.1 cancer in the UK! The Problem

    5. Skin cancer is the UK’s most common cancer with 125,000 new cases in the UK each year! Approx. 80% of cases are caused by over exposure to UV from the sun or sun bed usage – so are preventable with education! The incident rate of malignant melanoma (MM) – the deadliest form of the disease has doubled in the last 10 years. Experts estimate rates of skin cancer will double every 10-20 years if nothing is done! MM is the most common cancer in 15-34’s! Up to 80% of an individuals lifetime exposure probably occurs before the age of 21! The Facts

    6. More people die of skin cancer in the UK than in Australia The Facts Continued!

    7. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 The Law

    8. Skin Cancer – the burning issues

    9. Skin Cancer – the burning issues

    10. History Malignant Melanoma

    11. HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF FROM SKIN CANCER? SUN SAFETY DO’s…….

    12. Seek shade where possible, particularly between the hours of 11-3pm when UV penetration at its strongest!

    13. Wear a sun hat that has wide brim, shading the face, neck and ears. And wrap around sunglasses with good UV protection

    14. Shoulders are easily burned, try to keep them covered up with protective clothing

    15. Wear SPF 30+ broad spectrum, 4* plus rated sunscreen and re-apply every two hours

    16. SUN SAFETY DON’Ts…….

    17. Don’t think, ‘My skin never burns so I won’t get any long term skin damage’!!

    18. Don’t think ‘I do not need to use a sunscreen when the weather is cool and cloudy’, UVA/UVB penetration levels can still be high!

    19. Water resistant products protect me while I am in the water and I do not need to re-apply them when I sunbathe.

    20. Don’t think ‘Sunscreens with a high SPF prevent damage from the sun’s rays’

    21. We need to be protected against UVA as well as UVB

    22. Don’t think ‘I never sunbathe, so my skin will never be damaged by the sun’

    23. Don’t think ‘I use fake tan regularly which gives me a lovely golden brown colour so I don’t need to cover up and protect my skin in the sun’

    24.

    25. Back To The Charity………

    26. To put in place campaigns that create a significant change in public attitude towards the dangers of over exposure to UV, particularly in at risk groups (outdoor workers, sports and leisure groups, children etc) Establish Skcin as the LEAD charity for skin cancer in the UK, creating a HIGH profile for the disease To lobby government, to make changes to legislation and the direction of funding to significantly raise public awareness In the long term to not only provide the NHS with a massive saving in future funding but most importantly SAVE LIVES! What are Skcin going to achieve?

    27. The UK Skin Cancer Awareness Forum, hosted by Skcin, in March 2009, resulted in the formation of a UK Skin Cancer Awareness Collaboration Direct all funds for skin cancer awareness at education In years to come will bring huge savings for the National Health Service At present, it is estimated that £75 million pa is spent on the cost of secondary care skin cancer A very similar amount is spent within the primary care sector, totalling over £150,000,000 pa! Lobbying Government

    31. Skcin & Skin Cancer UK passionately believe in bringing about a significant change to reduce the number of unnecessary deaths in the UK. We want to raise the awareness of the issue and provide solutions to enable people to make informed choice as to how they interact with the sun in a safe manner. We want to ensure that outdoor workers are provided with suitable information and protection to enable them to work safely outdoors. www.skcin.org Summary
