  1. The Online Teacher Perspective What does Next Gen Learning look like in online and blended learning environments?

  2. Background: NGLC • EDUCAUSE in partnership with: • the League for Innovation in the Community College • International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL) • Council of Chief State School Officer (CCSSO). • Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

  3. Next Gen Learning Challenge Accelerates educational innovation through applied technology to dramatically improve college readiness and completion in the United States. • Expand the use of proven and emerging technologies • Collecting & sharing evidence that works • Fostering a community of innovators and adopters

  4. Next Gen Learning Is not about educating the next generation of students. It’s about engaging with today’sstudents through “next gen” teaching and learning designs that promise significantly higher achievement for many more students than current-generation approaches have been able to generate.

  5. NGL…catalyzed by • Deepened understanding of learning • Deepened understanding of learners • Recognition that the world has changed

  6. Focus Group • Professional Learning & Research Community • Ed. Web Blog Pre- & Post-webinar • Focus Group Webinar • Key Questions: • How do we measure up? • Role of the teacher? • How should the online environment be structured to promote NGL?

  7. Next Gen is personalized… • World class knowledge & skills • Performance-based • Variable pacing • Authentic student voice • Anytime, anywhere opportunities for learning • Comprehensive support systems

  8. Personalized Learning is not Personalized Instruction Individualization Differentiation Instruction that is paced to the learning needs of different learners PACE DIFFERS Instruction is tailored to the learning preferences of different learners METHODS/APPROACHES DIFFER Learning Goals the same for all learners

  9. Personalized Learning means • Objectives and content as well as methods and pace may vary • students know how they learn • students are co-learners and co-designers of the curriculum and the learning environment. • students own and drive their learning.

  10. How do we achieve NGL yet maintain our values, vision & mission?

  11. Initial reflections… “With the internet and creative instruction there is the promise of universal access to education, as well as the promise of individualized instruction for every student in the world.” “It is clear to me that we must begin developing and using the Next Generation Learning models to take more into account the learning styles of our students.  The idea that the variety and capabilities of our new and going to be new technologies increase the possibilities to digitally match the learning styles of our students is becoming a reality.”

  12. Strengths • Accessibility • Rigor • Alignment • Course Pacing Guides • Course Syllabi • Support Systems

  13. Strengths All students have a front seat in the online classroom. “Learning online has potential to eliminate the problem of absences or tardies - there are so many physical classroom issues that don't get in the way of online learning.”

  14. What changes would need to be made to move towards Next Generation Learning?

  15. NGL Teacher Teacher Student

  16. Teacher Role “Teachers would evolve into facilitators that are moving beyond a 'one size fits all' curriculum. The teacher could be a participant in helping the student determine and assess assignments, assessments, and projects. Instead of requiring students to do what is simply in the course, the teacher could help the students create their own demonstrations of mastery.”

  17. Active-Learning/Interactive Learning Environment Teacher Student Student Student Student Content Teacher Content

  19. Connector • Teacher Page (Bio) • Announcements • Messaging • Text • E-mail • Phone • Instructional Feedback • Student Conferences/Check-ins? • Social Networking

  20. Courses • Rigor • Alignment • Structure • More interactivity • Gaming • Wikis, blogs, group projects • Multimedia • Diversification of assignments • Student choice (demonstration of mastery) • Diagnostic Assessments-Adaptive Curriculum
