Why is water important to us? • Siksika were here since time immemorial: • considers the Water to be kin; • are the original “ecologists” • Way of life includes traditional ceremonies that take place at water’s edge.
Blackfoot TerritoryThe Niitsitapi or Real People were allied with both the Saskatchewan and Missouri watersheds
Siksika Water Society • Elder guided • Group will consist of: • Elders • Siksika department staff • Students • Teachers • Other government and non-government organizations
Our journey begins… • Reported on Navigate 2012 to school (Mar) • Displayed poster at the Siksika Health Fair (May) • Planned • Field study with Siksika Land and Alberta Riparian Habitat Management Society (May) • Participation in Alberta Water Quality Awareness Day • Water quality testing at school (Sept)
