The Fine Arts Library An Assessment Project using Instructional Assessment Resources (IAR)
Summary of Fine Arts Library Assessment Project • Purpose of the assessment project • Evaluation Plan for the Fine Arts Library • Instructional Assessment Resources (IAR) • Findings • Action Plan • Results
Purpose of the Fine Arts Library Assessment Project • To determine how current patrons use the Fine Arts Library • To determine the needs of the students, faculty and staff in the College of Fine Arts • To determine the needs of our other constituents • To develop ideas for improving the FAL facility, equipment, and services
Evaluation Plan for the Fine Arts Library • Gathering observational data • Conducting focus groups • Conducting surveys • Working with classes • Creating a timeline
Summary of findings: a balancing act • Physical items (print and media) AND electronic access, more computers • Laptop checkout, computer access AND electrical outlets for personal computers • Mac users AND PC users • Continue existing services AND add new services • Quiet, independent study spaces AND collaborative, group study spaces • Open views AND places to hide
Fine Arts Library Action Plan: New Services • Workstations and copiers on upper floors • Dubbing, scanning and editing equipment • Laptop checkout (overnight) • New software including Adobe creative suite • Display new CDs and DVDs • Digital camera checkout • Mac and PC workstations
Fine Arts Library Action Plan: Renovate Space • Replace carpeting • Window treatments • New paint • New furniture • Larger work areas around computers • More electrical outlets • Group study spaces • Screening room
Conclusions • Data gathered was mostly not a surprise but confirmed staff suspicions and verified ideas • Most suggestions have been acted upon • Not everything that was recommended can be acted upon
Final thought • I think that we need to rethink the role of the library (as a space, not as a service) to bring it back into the lives of the students and faculty. A meeting place, a lecture place, and place for discussion and exchange of ideas. The quiet library may be an image of the past. • -CoFA faculty member
