Chemical Nomenclature • The naming and writing of chemicals. (IUPAC or stock) • 4 Major naming systems • Ionic compounds • Acids • Molecular compounds • Organic compounds
Ionic naming system • Combination of cation (+) name and anion (-) name • The cation is always written first • Anion suffixes -ide, -ate, or -ite
CaF2 calcium fluoride NH4Br ammonium bromide Mg(C2H3O2)2 magnesium acetate Fe3(PO3)2 iron (II) phosphite
Writing ionic formulas • No + and – signs in the final formula • The superscript charge numbers become the opposite element’s subscript amount (reduced, common multiples) 3) use parenthesis on polyatomic ions if you need more than one of them
1) Sodium sulfate Na1+ SO42- Na2SO4 2) Ammonium phosphide NH41+ P3- (NH4)3P
Molecular Compounds Consists of 2 nonmetals, binary Uses a prefix system for number of atoms 1) First element name stays the same 2) Second element ends in –ide 3) number prefixes are added, except for mono on the first element
Acids If H+ and one other element (binary) Naming uses the anion name changing –ide to –ic and attaching the prefix hydro-
If H+ and a polyatomic anion (oxyacid) Naming uses just the polyatomic anion name changing the suffix -ate to –ic -ite to –ous
