Outline • Introduction • The Design Process • Progress to date • Future Plans
Introduction • What is a detector mount? • To put things in context *Images courtesy of 4STAR 4STAR Detectors and Mount
Introduction • Why is the mounting system necessary? • Temperature Control • Monitor and control detector temperature • Monitor and control the rate of temperature change • Focus Control • Moves the detector within the precision of a few microns • Tip/Tilt the detector MOSFIRE detector mount showing thermal and focus control mechanisms
The Design Process • How would one go about designing such a detector mount? • Defining the requirements • Conducting research • Narrowing the research • Any other alternative solutions? • Analysing the possible solutions • Finalising the design
Progress to Date • Defined the requirements • Why are these requirements necessary? • High resolution spectrograph are very very sensitive!
Progress to Date • Research into possible solutions • To acquire as much information as possible on Thermal and Focus control • Existing and planned instruments • MOSFIRE, 4STAR, NIRC, NIRI, IMACS etc. • Astronomical and Engineering literatures • Scientific instrument manufactures and suppliers • E.g. Lakeshore Instruments, Physik Instruments
What’s Next? • Finish up the broad subject research and begin narrowing down the options • Shortlist and analyse the remaining options • Produce a final design
