  2. HAMBURG MASSACRE • Took place in a predominately African American town in Aiken County • 6 black militia members were killed by a white mob • Marked an escelation of the white campaign to “redeem” SC’s government

ELECTION OF WADE HAMPTON • White Democratic “Red Shirts” led by Wade Hampton, Confederate general • led a campaign of violence, intimidation, and fraud to elect Hampton as Governor in 1876 • More troops were sent in to monitor the election, but fraud continued • Election came down to two candidates and was decided in the General Assembly

  4. PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 1876 • Northern support for Reconstruction began to fade • Corruption in Presidency • Economic depression • Western migration

Tilden (Democrat) vs. Hayes (Republican) At the end of the election, no candidate had the majority of the votes Compromise of 1877 Southern Democrats agreed to give Hayes their votes if he removed federal troops from the South Federal troops leave in April 1877. Wade Hampton becomes undisputed governor. Reconstruction officially ends in SC PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 1876
