Nanoscience is the study of small scale matter.Nanoscientists study materials of less than 100 nanometres.1 nanometre is a billionth of a metre and 100 times smaller than a bacterial cell.A human hair is80,000nm in diameter.
Nanotechnology was firstintroduced in 1959 by Nobel prize winner Richard Feynman . Nanoscience is present in nature , the manufacturing of materials , health research , the environment and in economics.
NANO IN NATURE … The foundations of nanoscience began in nature. The design of natural materials inspires nanoscientists . Eg. T he Lotus Leaf Effect inspired the idea for Waterproof Clothing and Self Cleaning windows. Eg. The colour of a Butterfly's wings influenced the Anti-Fraud applications for Currency Production.
NANO AND HEALTH RESEARCH … • Nanoscience will become a Major part of futurehealth research. • At present ,they are working on drugs with Nano particles that will target certain cells creating new personal and cancer treatments. • Research is also being done in smaller , more sensitive diagnostic devices that will require smaller amounts of blood , giving faster results .
NANOSCIENCE AND MATERIALS… • Materials behave differently in nanoscale. • E.g. Nanoized gold is red • Graphine,1 atom thick layer of carbon, is one of the strongest materials ever made. • Graphine makes stronger more efficient aeroplanes, sports equipment, electronics and sensors. • There are unlimited possibilities for nanoized materials.
NANOSCIENCE AND ECONOMICS… • Many industries depend on nanoscience for growth. • E.g. Electronics, Communications, Medical devices, Pharmaceuticals • It is estimated that the nanotech market will be worth $15 Trillion in 2015. • 100,000 jobs in Ireland depend on nanoscience. • 10% of Ireland’s exports are enabled by nanoscience.
NANO AND THE ENVIRONMENT… • Nanoscience develops more efficient ways of storing and distributing energy. • Nanocoatings are present on wind turbines. • Nanomaterials have developed flexible solar cells. • Nanoscience delvelops more environmentally friendly energy sources for a cleaner, greener environment!
NANOTECHNOLOGY AND ICT… • Nanotechnology has revolutionised the electronics industry. • They are constantly gathering information on smaller devices that will hold more storage space. • Magnetic nanowires ,E.g. nickel, cobalt, may be used in computers in the future . • Nanomaterials will enable electronic paper.
CRANN… • CRANN is one of the worlds leading Nanoscience researchers. • It involves Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, Pharmacology and Engineering. • Ireland is now currently 6th in the world rankings for Nanoscience and nanotechnology. • They train high-calibre PhD students.
