DYNAMIC NAVIGATION 2008 Cascade Server User’s Conference Brett Goodwin
Top Navigation • Allows Quick Access to Major Site Sections • Can be Simple Display or Expandable • Expandable Top Nav Should be Limited in Scope… Do Not Overwhelm • Use Depth Control on Index Block to Only Index What You Need
Left Navigation • Whole Site – Always shows top level landing on the left. Submenus appear as you move deeper. • Generally requires full site index block, up to depth of lowest navigation • Context Sensitive – Always shows contents of current folder. • Use current folder index block
Information Architecture • Your Folders ARE Your Navigation • Group Items Logically
References • Should only be used as a last resort • Allows you to place items from other areas of the site in your navigation • Does NOT actually publish a copy of the file… creates a “pointer”
Depth • Generally Limited by Design Considerations • Deeper isn’t always Better • Consider your Information Architecture
Metadata • Be Consistent! • Will you use Display Name or Title? • Will you select names from Folders or Index Pages? • Set Navigation Fields as Required • Inform your Users of Naming Conventions
