  2. What is WIC?

WIC… • Is a program for pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants, and children 1-5 years old who are low-income and are at nutritional risk. • Offers nutrition and breastfeeding education and support. • Makes referrals to community & health-care organizations. • Provides healthy foods.

  4. Nutrition Education and Counseling • Participant-centered • Stress the relationship between proper nutrition, physical activity, and good health • Focus on behavior change

  5. Breastfeeding Support • Individualized education and support by qualified breastfeeding experts • Breastfeeding moms receive greater quantities and varieties of food. • Breastfeeding moms can participate in the program longer than moms who do not breastfeed. • Have access to breastfeeding aids such as breast pumps • Support from peer counselors (at 4 local agencies)

WIC Provides Healthy Foods • Eggs • 100% Juice • Peanut butter • Beans, Peas, and Lentils • Canned Tuna or Salmon • Baby Food Fruits, Vegetables and Meats and Infant Cereal • Formula and WIC-Eligible Nutritionals • Fresh Fruits and Vegetables • Whole-wheat/whole-grain bread or pasta • Whole-wheat or soft corn tortillas • Brown Rice • Cereal • Cheese • Yogurt • Milk (soy options available)

  13. WIC Is For All Families! • WIC is made available to a variety of families: married and single parents, working or not working. • If you are a mother, father, grandparent, foster parent or other legal guardian of a child younger than 5, you can apply for WIC.
