  2. Heredity • The process in which characteristics pass from parents to offspring.

  3. Genetics • The scientific study of heredity.

  4. Traits • An organism’s physical appearance • Such as type of nose or long eyelashes

  5. DNA • Deoxyribonucleic Acid • Chromosomes are made partly of long-chain molecules call DNA

  6. Gene • A segment of a DNA molecule that contains information that governs a specific trait.

  7. Sexual Reproduction • Involves two parents who combine genetic material • Each parent provides part of the genes

  8. Asexual Reproduction • Offspring are produced by a single parent • An example is a one-celled organism, such as bacterium, dividing into two.

  10. Dominant and Recessive Alleles • Dominant: Always shows up in an organism • Cleft chin • Curly hair • Dark hair • Purple pea flowers • Recessive : Hidden when dominant is present • Straight hair • Red hair • Attached ear lobes • White pea flowers
