Proactive Umpiring Controlling the Controllables
Grant me the serenity to accept those things that I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can change and the wisdom to know the difference. • With apologies to the “ Serenity Prayer”
Habits of Successful People- • Habit #1 be…….. PRO-ACTIVE
How? • Have to be aware of the following
Proactivity • As human beings we are responsible for own lives, thoughts, actions, emotions. • You control what you THINK, SAY , DO or FEEL.
You have the ability to create in your minds beyond your present reality-
YOUR BRAIN TAKES SHORTCUTS • Lack of Focus and Lack of Attention to Detail can lead to your brain filling in the detail for you
LAWS OF CRICKET • And the SPIRIT of cricket.
You have the ability to act based on self-awareness- Independent will
SELF AWARENESS • Know your strengths- Enhance and use these at every opportunity • Know your weaknesses- Do everything in you power to eliminate their influence • You will need to be HONEST with yourself
Create a Personal Vision Self-awareness enables us to stand apart and examine the way we see ourselves.
Things that concern us as umpires • We each have a wide range of concerns before, during and after a cricket match that may affect our performance our health/fitness, our family, work , distractions, concentration, focus, captains and players attitudes, pressures, colleague, reports, perceptions, reputations, expectations, conditions, appeals………….
What can we control? • Concerns fall in one of three areas: • Direct control: problems involving our own behaviour that we control directly. • Indirect control: problems involving the behaviour of others that influence us. • No control: problems we can do nothing about, e.g., the past.
So how do we deal with these? • We need to separate from those things in which we have no particular mental or emotional involvement thus creating a "Circle of Concern." • As we look at those things within our Circle of Concern, it becomes apparent that there are some things over which we have no real control and others that we can do something about. • We could identify those concerns in the latter group by circumscribing them within a smaller “Circle of Influence”
Circle of Concern/Circle of Influence • Where do you focus your time and energy? • Proactive people focus their efforts in the Circle of Influence. • Reactive people focus their efforts in the Circle of Concern.
Changing your habits, changing your methods of influence and changing the way you see your problems are all within your Circle of Influence.
PROACTIVE UMPIRING • Proactive umpires focus their efforts in the Circle of Influence. They work on the things they can do something about. The nature of their energy is positive, enlarging and magnifying, causing their Circle of Influence to increase.
REACTIVE UMPIRES • Reactive umpires, on the other hand, focus their efforts in the Circle of Concern. They focus on the weakness of other people, the problems in the environment, and circumstances over which they have no control. Their focus results in blaming and accusing attitudes, reactive language, and increased feelings of victimization. The negative energy generated by that focus, combined with neglect in areas they could do something about, causes their Circle of Influence to shrink.
Proactive vs Reactive Umpiring • Reactive umpires are driven by feelings eg getting a decision wrong and dwelling on it, circumstances eg the loudness of the appeal or the 3rd LBW, conditions eg. Weather , the environment. eg state of the pitch or match • Proactive umpires are driven by carefully considered actions ,selected thoughts and behaviour and planned responses..
How proactive are you? • By determining which of these two circles is the focus of most of your time and energy, you can discover much about the degree of your proactivity.
NOW THINK OF AN UMPIRE WHO • Performs consistently at a high-level • Prepares with purpose, intensity and focus • Is self-aware • Is self analytical • Displays self-reliance • Is mentally tough • Displays leadership qualities
Taking the Initiative • Taking the initiative • does not mean being pushy, • obnoxious, or aggressive. • It does mean recognizing • our responsibility • to make things happen.
REMEMBER • Nobody is PERFECT • But EXCELLENT will probably be OK
