  2. Words for Analyzing Informational Text • Fact-something that can be proved true • Opinion-a personal belief that can’t be proved, only supported.

  3. Main idea-the message, opinion, or idea that a writer wants to communicate. The most important point or central message in a nonfiction text. When you look for the main idea of an informational text, look for clues in these places: title, introduction, headings, repeated wordsand phrases, and conclusion. Main ideas can be supported with facts, opinions, quotations, or evidence.

  4. Bias-prejudice • Tone-the attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character

  5. Primary source-a firsthand account of an event. Primary sources may be biased or limited. Examples of primary sources are letters, speeches, or diaries. • Secondary source-a secondhand account of an event • They may include several different viewpoints. Examples of secondary sources are textbooks, encyclopedias, magazine, and newspaper articles.

  6. Synthesize-when you synthesize information, you consider all the sources as a group to see how they fit together. • Audience-the group for whom the informational text is written • Purpose-the reason for which the informational text was written
