What are Colons? Colons are punctuation marks that may be used to introduce a description or a set. For example: The three things my English teacher can’t stand are: Boring cants, idiots, and students that say stupid things. In this sentence, the colon is used to introduce things in a respective order.
What are Colons? (cont.) • Colons can also be used to introduce speech. This is most commonly used in scripts. • Ex: Jim Bob: I introduce to you, the wonderful, magical, bona fide hair growth potion. • In this sentence, the colon is used to indicate the person who is speaking in the script.
Other uses for colons are: • Introduction to a definition Ex: Veritable: actual • Separation of a movie title with its subtitle Ex: Manos: The Hands of Fate • Indicate time Ex: At 2:45, the con artist in the alley was arrested for fraud and robbery.
