Company Details • Spinoff from Incubator Catalyx, Inc. in 2004 • Focused on high performance catalysis. • First product is low temperature H2 production. • Steam Reformers with electrically activated catalysts.
Untreated Biogas as a Fuel for ICEs • Low methane content • Higher heat dissipation from CO2 • Difficult to run at very lean mixtures for low NOx emissions • Will require pre-treatment if post combustion catalytic NOx control technologies are adopted.
Towards ZERO NOx EmissionsCurrent Perceptions SCR Landfill or WWTP More Treatment Of Feed Gas ICEs Require Standby Natural Gas Fuel Cells 3rd Party Reliance for Pre Treatment High Temp Low Uptime Reliability Issues Still Generate NOx (Low Levels) Turbines
Internal Combustion Engines • Most popular technology for power generation from biogas and landfill gas. • Low electrical efficiency, but thermal energy is utilized – CHP • Very little pre-treatment required so far. • Mature, predictable technology.
Reducing NOx Emissions in ICEs by H2 Injection • High flame speed allows much leaner operation. • Increase of HP for given equivalence ratio. • Can be produced on site from biogas. • Pre-combustion technique, no new pre-treatment required. • Drop in cost of power production due to higher efficiency.
H2 Injection (Why is it not used?) • Conventional H2 plants not designed for small volume on site use • Cost • Footprint • Complicated to operate • Combustion is integral part of technology • Heating feed gas to 900°C • Heating catalyst • Resulting NOx emissions would neutralize benefit at a minimum
Energix Technology • Gases are not preheated – No NOx • Catalyst is locally activated by small electric current • 2.5 KW/MWe • Less than HP increase gained due to efficiency. • No NOx • Compact, low cost units $ 50,000 investment per MWe ICE.
Biogas to Electricity Fuel Cells • Low temperature PEM Fuel Cells are used as backup power • No moving parts. • Instant start, no warmup. • Favorable Turn Down ratios for variable biogas flows. • No NOx emissions – Permanent fix to regulatory issues. • Favorable rebate programs allow PPA arrangements by vendors.
Energix Fuel Cell Offering • Integrated biogas to power system – Single point responsibility • Pretreatment • Reforming • Hydrogen purification • Power generation • Grid synchronization • No risk, PPA based installation • 30 KW to 150 KW modules • No standby natural gas source required – can operate on 30% CH4 content.
