Advancing AFNLP's Goals for the Future: Strengthening Links and Promotional Activities in Language Processing

In the years 2008 to 2011, AFNLP organized conferences in Manchester, Singapore, Beijing, and proposed new initiatives. The focus was on enhancing collaborations with international bodies, including adding an ACL office holder to the executive committee. To strengthen ties further, links with other bodies like SIGIR and AAMT were sought. Membership negotiations with China were led by Benjamin Tsou, welcoming new members and engaging in regular newsletters. Promotional efforts included summer/winter schools, a researcher database, and joint activities with partner organizations. The future roadmap entails expanding databases, recommending researchers for conferences, and fostering more collaborative partnerships.

Conferences • Aug, 2008: Manchester, Coling, Asia-related events organized by AFNLP • 2009: Singapore, Jointly organized with ACL • 2010: Beijing, Coling, to establish an official link with the organizer • 2011: Call for proposal (to be crafted by CCC), Preparation of Conference Manual • LREC in Asia

Reaching Out • Strengthening Links with international bodies • To add an ACL office holder to our executive committee and appoint a liaison officer for ACL • To establish links with other related bodies such as SIGIR, Web communities, Oriental Cocosda, AAMT, etc. • Strengthening Links with other organizations in Asia • Membership of China, Chief Negotiator: Benjamin Tsou • Several new members • Newsletters (Editorial Group), events in regions, short articles, short description of projects, once every two months

Promotional Activities / Events • Summer / Winter Schools • Database for researchers • Extension and maintenance of the current DB developed by KY Su • List of recommended researchers for international conferences • Resource databases compiled by the resource committee • Joint activities with other organizations (links from/to our website, official partners)
