  1. Science

  2. Science • The process of inquiry of raising and trying to answer questions about the world

  3. Children are Natural Scientists • Children will engage in their own experimentation and problem solving when opportunities are available. • It is the teacher’s role to provide helpful materials and experiences where experimentation can occur and children’s theory building is facilitated. • Children ask their own questions and have a means to look for answers.

  4. Constructivist Perspective… • has many sources…children’s interests, teacher’s interests as well as teacher’s judgment about what can potentially interest the child. • Look to see what questions children are asking, or trying to figure out. • Is a hands-on, minds on approach

  5. The Learning Environment • Allow for good traffic flow and easy, unmonitored movement from area to area • Allow as much flexibility in the use of physical space as possible • Allow for flexibility of furniture • Accessibility of materials encourages self direction • Provide objects that can be used in multiple ways

  6. Learning Environment • Practical considerations • Expect reasonable noise and movement • Activities made available influences the degree of social interaction • The layout of the room and size and shape of furniture influences nature of social interaction • Self direction encouraged by the organization of physical and social environment • Environment can foster children’s ability to engage in social problem solving

  7. Role of Teacher • Not transmitting knowledge to children • “The teacher is the core, the orchestrator, the creator of an environment in which learning thrives.” • Facilitator of learning rather than mere transmitter

  8. The Teacher … • Is a presenter • Is an observer • Is a question asker and problem poser • Is an environment organizer • Is a public relations manager • Is a documenter • Is a contributor or classroom culture • Is a theory builder

  9. Constructivist Educational Environment • Supports the child as a scientist and acknowledges the child as a theory builder • “The primary goal of education is to create people who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done-people who are creative, inventive and discoverers.” Piaget
