3 main objectives for Islam: • Know basic foundation story and beliefs • Be able to explain how Islam became such a widespread religion and powerful, unified empire • Compare/contrast Islam, Christianity, and Judaism
Foundation of Islam • 570 CE • 610/613 CE • 622 CE • 630CE • 632 CE
Basic Beliefs: 5 Pillars of Islam • “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet” • Pray 5 times a day, facing Mecca
Alms to the Poor (2.5%, or 1/40th) -everything belongs to God, everyone can give something 4. Fast during the month of Ramadan • Month when Quran was revealed • Dawn to sundown- no food, drink, or sex • Eid al-Fitr = feast at end of Ramadan 5. Hajj: once in lifetime, if able, make pilgrammage to Mecca
The Hajj:Rituals • Day 1: • Wear Ihram = white seamless cloth • Purity, equality, grace of God • Proclaim the “Talbiyah” = “I’m at your service, God”- go to Mina • Day 2: • Go to plains of Arafat, meditate on God’s forgiveness (where Adam and Eve found themselves after exile from Eden)
Day 3: back to Mina • Throw stones at 3 pillars (Devil) • FEAST = Eid Al-Adha = feast of sacrifice • Go to sacred Mosque in Mecca to perform • “the circling”: Walk around Kaaba 7 times • Kiss Black Stone • “the running” = commemorate Hagar, Abraham’s wife*, running for water when building Kaaba
Forbidden in Islam: • Gambling • Pork • Alcohol • Dishonesty • Sexual impurity • Idol worship!!! • (art?)
Holy Books • Quran = “recitation” • Dictated words of God • In Arabaic, because God’s words were in Arabaic • Hadith • Collection of sayings from Muhammad to supplement the revelations from God in Koran
Beliefs about Muhammad • A prophet, not a god, not divine • The final prophet • Moses and Jesus = prophets, revered, but some of message corrupted, and corrected by Muhammad
