  4. Milestones of Swiss Feed Database (2) Conception (Agroscope), Programming (ETHZ, Prof. H. Hinterberger) Online publishing, German + French versions Link to E-Feed learning tool (feed catalogue with information to quality aspects and feeding restrictions – is used for lectures in feed science at veterinary and agronomic faculties) Online updating 2005 - 2007 Nutrient and nutritive values for more than 600 raw materials and roughage for ruminants, pigs, horses and poultry (mean values) 2007/2008 2007 - 2013

  5. Milestones of Swiss Feed Database (3) Managing Time-Varying Measurement Sets in Databases (TAMEUS) Data Warehouse: - detailed and aggregated feeding values - geographical, temporal, biological and technical information - Visualizations on Google Maps and multiple charts 2011 - 2014 DatabaseTechnologyResearch Group, University Zürich Prof. M. Böhlen, Dr A. Taliun, F. Cafagna 2013 - Online updatings Further development… (see outlook)

  6. Customer Segments and Benefit Individual farmers Feed industry Extension services • Require sortable table with up-to-date aggregated nutrient contents for calculating feeding plans and nutrient balance sheets • save time and costs (analysis and feed) • protecting environment • monitoring of the feeding value Education and governmental organizations • Use it for teaching/daily work • benefit from an intuitive and simple navigation • up-to-date feed data • information platform Agricultural research • Is interested in detailed information enhanced by charts, maps, statistics and search refinement •  data history •  trend analysis • correlations between nutrients • pattern recognition • monitoring of ecologically relevant parameters

  7. Service Packages Free of charge:collaborators Agroscope, BLW, e-feed group, sponsors, partners

  8. Partners Support us with feed data • Animal feed laboratories • UFAG Laboratorien, Sursee • Eurofins, Schönenwerd • Animal feed companies • UFA, Herzogenbuchsee • Wydenzentrum E-Feed catalogue with information to quality aspects and feeding restrictions E-Feed Learning Tool - School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences

  9. Budget for 3 years (in CHF) More funds are needed for further research & development as of the end of 2014

  10. Revenue Revenue sources for the needed funds • Subscription • Advertising campaign starting in July 2013 with the new feed database • Sponsoring • Contact potential sponsors started in 2012 (18 contacts, 1 sponsor accepted) • Foundations/Research programs • Submit a request for research funds Agroscope 2014 (in Aug. 2013) • Apply for other funds

  11. Revenue Possible difficulties • Federal Office • government-financed: open access versus paid access • Official Feed Inspection versus feed services • annual budget cuts • Sponsors • sponsors wait and see  we have to give them a benefit (= more users of the feed database) • Swiss market • decreasing agricultural sector (farms, feed companies) • limited possibility of expansion abroad

  12. Outlook Feed Basics on To produce a widely recognised reference platform for accurate and extensive feed information Relevance at local level Fine tune animalfeedingatfarmlevelwhichis essential fortheefficientuseofresourcesandlowemissions (particularly P + N) Relevance at national level The monitoringoffeedqualityyieldsindications on theaveragenutrientcontentandtheextentofthevariabilityalongspaceandtime Long termgoals Toestablish links withotherdatabasescontainingclimate, geographicorother GIS-baseddata. www.feedbase.ch
