    20. CLAIM STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION SUMMARY Claims are a statutory requirement in a patent and define ownership rights. Modern U.S. claims have three components, each with different significance. Open claims have vastly broader scope than closed. The claim must be supported in the original disclosure and therefore cannot be broadened during prosecution. “Prosecution” means “as it is examined in the patent office.” A patent can disclose more than it claims.
