Aspects of Reform • Second Great Awakening – religious revival of the 1820s and 1830s • Effect: caused many individuals to try and become better citizens in order to be saved by God
Aspects of Reform • Transcendentalism- the philosophy to look beyond logical thinking and reach true understanding by using emotion and intuition • Effect: caused people to look at and question society
Aspects of Reform • Public Education- the general public is educated using tax dollars • Effect: allowed more to be educated and created a better society
Aspects of Reform • Women Reform- wanted more rights (ability to vote, own property, go to college, hold professional jobs, have a voice in government) • Effect: created the Declaration of Sentiments, more women fought for their own rights as well as rights for African Americans (both get their own freedom)
Aspects of Reform • Temperance Movement- social movement against the use of alcohol, wanted to limit the distribution. • Effect: Many thought limiting alcohol would make a better society
Aspects of Reform • Abolitionist Movement- People who favored the end of slavery • Effect: Caused more people to publically speak out against slavery

Main Concept Reform movement caused many to rethink American society and the enslavement of millions of African Americans. Cause of the Civil War because more and more are opposing what is going on in the South
