  3. Step 2 • Scrub hands for 10 – 15 seconds (sing “Happy Birthday to You”) • Wash all surfaces thoroughly, including wrists, palms, back of hands, fingers, and under the fingernails. • Rinse with water

  4. Step 3 • Dry hands • Turn off the faucet with the paper towel if possible • Hand sanitizers or wipes can be used in addition to washing or when washing is not feasible • Apply hand lotion if desired

  5. When should you wash your hands? • Wash your hands: • Before and after eating or preparing food • After handling waste: human, chemical, or otherwise • After you blow your nose • if you cough or sneeze into your hands • remember it’s better to use your sleeve or elbow instead of your hands • Before and after treating cut or wound • During times of illness

Some Hand Washing Facts • Proper hand washing is one of the best methods used to prevent the spread of diseases • In a Study a survey 92% of the adults in the US say they wash their hands after using a public restroom. However the observations done on public restrooms showed it to be more around 77% • That same study shows women washing at 88% and men at 66% of the time
