Napoleon Bonaparte The Rise and Fall of a Legend!
Early Life • At age 9, Napoleon went to military school and was made fun of for accent and height • At age 15, went to French military school and showed great promise as a military leader • He joined French military during the French Revolution
Napoleon is a Hero • The National Convention was under attack and Napoleon led a counterattack to save the Republic • When The Directory takes control they ask Napoleon to lead an army attack against Austria and he wins • The Directory begins to lose power, Napoleon is urged to seize control
Napoleon Takes Over • 1799 – Napoleon overthrows the Directory and the people elect him as first Consul for life • The people wanted a stable government and Napoleon appeared to be the man to give this to them • 1804 – Napoleon crowns himself Emperor Napoleon I of France and begins his quest to take over Europe and the Americas • Napoleon’s European Empire lasted for about 5 years
Napoleon’s Downfall • Napoleon’s army is dwindling as he fights more and more battles • Napoleon attacks Russia in the winter and gets trapped – losses half his army • Europe takes advantage and attacks back • Napoleon sent to island of Elba
End of Napoleon • Napoleon escapes the island and returns to France • “Hundred Days” – Napoleon’s last reign of power • Defeated by British and Prussia as he tries to take back his empire • Exiled to St. Helenawere he dies
