Goals of the AP Expansion Project • Increase the number of AP courses by 50% in participating schools. • Expand the pool of AP teachers and coordinators in participating schools through advocacy and professional development. • Expand resources and delivery options for AP coursework.
Goal of the Outside Evaluation Measure the impact of the NGA-DPI grant in 8 school districts [12 secondary schools] during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 school years, with 2005-06 used as a baseline.
13 Evaluation Questions • How did the number and percent of students taking AP classes change from 2005-06 to 2007-08? Was the project goal of increasing student AP participation by 50% achieved? • How did the number and percent of students achieving mastery in AP exams change from 2005-06 to 2007-08? • How did the ethnic makeup of students taking AP classes change from the 2005-2006 to 2007-2008? • What percent of students were provided with funds to take AP classes and AP exams? What impact did this have on student enrollment, retention, and success? • Was the project goal of promoting the value of AP classes for all, especially under-served students, achieved? • Did the number of Local Education Guides and teachers trained to teach AP courses change from 2005-06 to 2007-08? Was the project goal (increasing by 50% the number of Local Education Guides and teachers prepared to teach AP classes) achieved? • Did student achievement vary according to the availability of Local Education Guides? • Did student achievement vary according to delivery mode [class on site vs. Two Way Interactive TV]? • To what extent did project sponsored professional development conform to best practices? • Did project sponsored professional development expand the pool of AP teachers and Local Education Guides? • How can vertical teams of middle school and high school teachers be implemented in rural areas? • What approaches to identifying prospective AP students, especially from under served populations, were successful? • What implementation differences were there between the urban and rural districts.

Local Districts’ Roles in This Evaluation • Evaluation “Subjects” • Complete surveys • Answer questions • Provide Data about students who agree • Site Coordination/Liaison with Evaluator • Complete UW-Madison IRB requirements • Secure Informed Consents from staff • Secure Informed Consents from parent/guardians and Students • Distribute Surveys to all who provide informed consent. • Assemble data from school records, and provide copies to the outside evaluator
