  3. MANDATE Pharmacy Council derives its mandate from the Pharmacy Act 1994 (Act 489). Charged with the priority responsibility for “securing in the public interest the highest standards in the practice of pharmacy” in Ghana Pharmacy Council POW-2008

  4. KEY COMPONENTS by ensuring competent pharmaceutical care providers who practice with agreed standards . accessible pharmaceutical services to the whole population. Collaboration with related local agencies and international pharmaceutical organizations to enhance our effectiveness rational use of medicines in the nation. This mission shall be carried out with dedication, integrity and professionalism. Pharmacy Council POW-2008

  5. POLICY THRUST The policy thrust of the pharmacy council for 2008 will be to work towards improving access to Pharmaceutical facilities in deprived areas and to empower consumers to use medicines rationally. Pharmacy Council POW-2008

PRIORITY ACTIVITIES Develop and implement policies and programmes to enhance access to pharmaceutical services in deprived areas Institute public education activities on rational use of medicines (RUM) and danger of drug abuse Foster partnerships and close collaboration with relevant organizations to improve our performance in ensuring RUM in Ghana. Work with collaborators in the pharmaceutical industry to assure quality of medicines . Pharmacy Council POW-2008

  7. PRIORITY ACTIVITIES Cont. Effectively train all pharmaceutical service providers to ensure quality service provision. Ensure compliance to practice standards through inspections, monitoring and enforcement. Improve institutional capacity through recruitment and training. Pharmacy Council POW-2008

  8. EXPECTED RESULTS Increase in number of licenses issued to pharmacies and chemical sellers in deprived areas. Percentage population knowledgeable in RUM increased Number of IE&C campaigns carried out Number of collaborative meetings held with road maps drawn Pharmacy Council POW-2008

  9. EXPECTED RESULTS Cont. Improvement in inspection and monitoring activities. Number of providers trained in emerging health issues. Strengthened staff through recruitment and training. Improved supplies and logistics Pharmacy Council POW-2008

  10. CHALLENGES Inadequate comprehensive enabling legislation with regulations and supportive guidelines that applies to current environmental changes and political support. Brain drain of Pharmacists Blatant flouting of rules and regulations governing the practice of Pharmacy. Pharmacy Council POW-2008

  11. CHALLENGES Cont. Inadequate staff High staff turnover Lack of logistics and equipment to monitor and enforce regulations and Inadequate funds to maintain programmes. Pharmacy Council POW-2008
