  3. 1 The fundamental parts of the Spanish verb Theinfinitive: Tells the meaning of the verb without naming any subject or tense. There are three kinds of infinitives in Spanish: The Spanish infinitive are: –ar, –er, –ir

  4. 2 The fundamental parts of the Spanish verb The ending always consists of two letters. The ending: The last two letters of the infinitive.

  6. 3 The fundamental parts of the Spanish verb The stem can consist ofa variable number of letters, depending on the length of the verb in question. Thestem or root: Whatever is left after removing the ending from the infinitive.

Hablar = habl- + AR Enseñar = enseñ- + AR Estudiar = estudi- + AR Necesitar = necesit- + AR STEM + ENDING • You WANT to use verbs in ways other than in the infinitive • form. • To do this, you DROP the –ar ending and make changes. • The stem carries the basic meaning while the ending tells • “who(subject)” and “when(tense).”
