Roger Bannister is the first man to break the four-minute mile. On May 6, 1954, Bannister was clocked at 3:59:04, at a meet at Oxford University. Because of his achievement he was chosen as Sports Illustrated's first "Sportsman of the Year." Quote: "Doctors and scientists said that breaking the four-minute mile was impossible, that one would die in the attempt. Thus, when I got up from the track after collapsing at the finish line, I figured I was dead." -- Roger Bannister Great Quote: "What Roger Bannister did is the single greatest athletic achievement of the 20th century.....Let me tell you why I say this about Bannister. I say this about Bannister because of the spirit of optimism that it gave to people. The thing about running is everyone can run, and in every country of the world, people do run. That is an international event and for many many years people said the 4 minute mile was undoable. It's like when you land a guy on the moon - you land a lot of guys on the moon after that, but the first guy, that's a real big deal . I just think the spirit of optimism that that gave people- like climbing Mt. Everest - no one wants to do it but when you do it, it's a big deal. ...Again I think running and jumping is what everyone in the world has in common." -Tony Kornheiser commenting on Roger Bannister's historic sub-4 minute mile during the greatest show on television, ESPN's Pardon the Interuption.
