  3. What is Social Science? • Dumbstruck silence • Study of what people do in their social life • Study of our behaviour – what makes people tick • We all do it • The study of the obvious • Sociology, Psychology

  4. What are Social Scientists Like? • No strong image • Not in a lab – out in the world • More people oriented than scientists • People who want to make things better

  5. Scientific but not Science • Repeatable • Collecting and collating data • Analytical • No formulas but formulaic

  6. Who Uses Social Science? • The Government • Journalists • Businesses

  7. Is Social Science Useful? • Yes • Need to understand why people do things to make things better • But politicians bend the findings to suit themselves

  8. Is Social Science Interesting? Very interesting Fairly interesting

  9. Is Social Science Beneficial? Very interesting Fairly interesting

  10. Conclusion? • Social scientists are already engaged in societal issues and the concerns of the public
