What is an IT Plan? • Strategic Information Systems Plan (SISP) • IT-specific programs or projects that help an organization achieve its business goals • Includes cross-functional planning group • Effective IT strategy • Business/clinically driven • Based on known IT initiatives • Prioritized along dimensions of risk and value Source: (Smaltz & Carpenter, 2008.)
What is an IT Plan? (2) • Strategic and Tactical Plans • Tactical —short term to propel operations • Strategic—link between organizational strategy and supporting IT Source: (Smaltz & Carpenter, 2008.)
Importance of an IT Plan • IT plans can support organizational goals • Assures clinical and administrative systems are capable of meeting goals • Can suggest timing or priority of goals
Importance of an IT Plan (2) • IT plans guide decision making across time • Integrating plans for long- and short-term projects • Roadmap for different projects • Priorities among projects
Importance of an IT Plan (3) • IT plans align and prioritize organizational programs and projects • Planning process forces thinking about organizational direction • Needs conscious alignment of projects and goals
Why is IT Alignment Difficult? • Expectations Differ • Difficult to quantify expenses • Business and IT needs often estimated • Incorrect estimates affect both business and IT decisions and outcomes • Expectations must be managed • Stakeholders need clear understanding of scope and outcome
