  3. Steps • Choose a book and a partner • Get the book and partner approved by Mrs. Marshburn by 3/23 • Set up your reading and response schedule • Stay on track to finish

  4. General Directions: • With your partner or parent, divide the book into six sections by chapter. Set a date to complete each and assign a responder. Once completed, write the date the response was actually completed.

  5. Written Responses: • In the response, you can write about the literary elements that you observe in the book, as well as personal reactions. You should use specific academic vocabulary terms like character, plot, setting, suspense, rising action, irony, symbols, figurative language, mood, tone, style, theme, etc. When you use these words, highlight or circle them. Also, you could write about the significance of a particular quote. PLAN YOUR RESPONSE BEFORE WRITING SO THAT YOU ARE ORGANIZED AND CLEAR.

  6. (cont.) • In Response 1, you will write completely about the book. In each response after that, you can take up to half of the response space to react to your partner’s response. Then write your own new observations about the section you were assigned.
