Self-Reflection Luke Walker
First post • Before I started writing in college I had a very bland style. • I would always stick to the classic 5 paragraph Essay format. • I was never very creative with my ideas because I had to stick to exactly what the teacher wanted to hear. • I also had to have the exact format that the rubric stated, therefore impairing my ability to write creatively. • My first post was actually probably the most freedom that I have had in a writing assigment.
Narrative essay • My English 101 narrative essay was titled “The Deer”. • I really liked this essay because I like telling stories and that’s exactly what I chose to do. • I was very surprised how easy it became to just write down what I was thinking and then compile it into an understandable piece of work. • There was a lot of this essay that I could have fixed and edited but overall, I was very excited to be writing on a level that pleased me.
Persuasive essay • I really like challenging the beliefs of people, and defending when people challenge my beliefs. • My persuasive essay on the Nietzsche reading we had went well due to this. • I basically sat down and tried to prove a point by pulling out examples and quotes from the reading. • I knew before that this is how you are supposed to write a persuasive essay, but this time I put a lot more effort into proving that point. • It was at this point that I realized that blogging and practicing new writing styles had began to make an impact on my own.
Wall-e movie • When first signing up for English 101 watching the movie Wall-E was the last thing I thought I would be doing. • Before I took this course I had never seen the movie. • I had also never analyzed a movie in the way we were assigned. • The first time we watched it I actually just enjoyed it. • It was the second time that I began to realize many key elements that would help me with my analysis paper.
Earth • Our class discussions on Earth were some of the best that I had ever had. • We all had so many insightful ideas to announce. • Every discussion ended differently, and almost every one got off subject, but never strayed too far from the main idea. • Some days I may not have contributed as much as I should have, but I was always listening intent fully to my classmates ideas. • They were always discussions that definitely made you think about everyday life.
Wall-e Analysis • I had never written an analysis before college. • I was very intimidated when I first heard the announcement that the Wall-E analysis was our biggest grade for the year. • I don’t think that I could have done the job I did if I hadn’t gotten the experience from writing the other two papers. • I took things from both writings that I had learned, also I thought very deeply into the movie to find details that I could use. • I think now that a lot of work in college relates to individuality and creativity.
