Take over day • Medway Young Commissioners volunteered • One of the priority issues in Medway • Interviewed various practitioners • Interviewed Tracey Crouch MP • We set a number of questions
Do you think being overweight is a growing problem in Medway? • It’s not just a Medway problem • 20% (1/5) obese (year 6 ) • Could have impacts on health • Costs a lot to treat • Less tax paid due to sickness
Health risks of Obesity • Nerve endings get clogged up • Low Self esteem / emotional issues • Diabetes- (amputations, cardiovascular diseases) • Cancer • Eye sight • Infertility
How can you tell if someone’s obese? • You can’t always tell by looking at them • Pear/apple shapes for women • BMI (body mass index) • Waist to hip ratio
SHOCKING RELEVATION!!! • Bottle fed babies are at risk • 30,000 more calories by age 8 months • More cancers, more diabetes and higher blood pressure in later life • If you breastfeed you lose 500 calories a day • less risk of ovarian and breast cancer and post-natal depression • If you’re under 20, white and left school at 16, you’re least likely to breastfeed
How can the problem be stopped? • Education- inform people • Exercise • Healthy diet • DETERMINATION • Self will • Early advice • Drugs-shortcut • Change lifestyle PERMANENTLY
What is available? • Infant feeding co-ordinators • Supporting young parents integrated team • Health visitors (up to age 5) • MEND (2-13year old) • Student health services (8 secondary schools and one college)
Where are the gaps in the service • Not enough information • School nurses are too busy • No cooking in most schools • No cheap healthy food (most cheap food is unhealthy) • Good food not well advertised • 11-19 year old support • Family support • Free or cheaper activities • Games or PE reduced in most schools
Big thank you to : Nicky Ling, Strategic Health Manager Wendy Brownrigg, Infant Feeding Coordinator Jo Carpenter , Health Visitor Dr Dhindsa, General Practitioner Parent of MEND programme Tracey Crouch, MP Chatham & Aylesford
