  2. Food • Acorns and salmon are main source of food. • Acorns are ground into flour then mush. • They used hot stones to cook salmon and mush. • They also ate berries, roots, nuts, and greens. • Hupas ate meat too. Such as elk and deer.

  3. Tools and Trade • Platters and bowls were made outof cedar. • Hazel branches were used for baskets along with tree roots witch are weaved in. • When they trade with the Yurok they get back salt, canoes, and salt water fish.

  4. House and Location • Hupas lived in the northwestern part of California (Humbolt County). • There houses are shaped like pyramids. • They built there houses out of fir planks and cedar. • The houses were built over a small, square, earth pit. • There is a small hole cut at the corner for them to get in and out. • There are dirt shelves used for storage.

  5. Clothing • Men wore a piece of deer skin or if it’s hot they wore something less. • Women wore double aprons. • When warmth was needed they wore robes made out of bunnies. • They used baskets for shade.

  6. Fun Facts • The headman is always the richest. • The name ‘Hupa’came the Yuroks word ‘hupo’. • The hupas call themselves ‘natinnoh-hoi’ after natinnoh, The Trinity River. • The Hupa villages have about 500 Indians.
