NHS Athens • What is Athens? – Athens is an access management system that controls access to online resources • Why do we use it? – You only need one username and password to access 1000’s of resources! • How do I get one? - You can register yourself – www.library.nhs.uk or contact the library • Where/How Do I use it? – You can go to the resource itself directly or go to www.library.nhs.uk which hosts all those resources in one place!

Guidance Clinical Knowledge Summaries NICE Guidelines Other Guidelines (Both UK & International) Keyword/Date/Topic search Strengths – no need for paper copies, always up-to-date, always available, current ‘NICE’ approved information Limitations – current ‘NICE’ approved information (not horizon scanning)

My Library • Up-top! – News and Information • Down Below! Complete List of all Athens Resources • The A-Z List • Strengths – Can access whatever you need . Always a good back up! • Limitations – Information is normally available and easily accessible elsewhere on site
My Journals • Available on home page • Can search: 1) A-Z list 2) Text Search 3) Citation Search • Q - When should I use it? A) When you know what your after! • Strengths – Full list of all available e-journals • Limitations – Only shows what is available (more available via NHS Bolton Library)
E-Books • Available on homepage • Keyword/Topic based search • Strengths – 1000’s of books available NOW • Limitations – technology required
Specialist Collections (1) • Formerly known as Specialist Libraries • “The NHS Evidence Specialist Collections filter the huge quantity of published research to ensure that you find only the best available evidence. From them, you can link to the latest guidelines, systematic reviews and research in your area of interest.” • They are: Trusted; Relevant; Comprehensive; NHS led; Easy to use.
Specialist Collections (2) • 30 + overarching collections covering 100 topics broken into 3 sections: Health Problems; Patient Groups; Health Service Aspects • Searchable by topic/keyword or drop down menus • Strengths – All current NICE approved evidence in 1 place • Limitations – Current thinking only
NHS Evidence (1) • Launched in April 2009 • ‘Powered’ by NICE • For health/social care staff, students and general public • ‘Health Google’ • Health Evidence vs. Health Information • Always Developing… The Future?
NHS Evidence (2) • Search by keyword • Reduce results by limits on left hand side step by step • Strengths – (in theory) contains everything else mentioned • Limitations – difficulty finding (re-finding) evidence
Review • Athens • Many ways to find evidence • Good for searching what is already ‘known’ • My Journals good for searching if you know what your after – not so good when finding what is available
