What is a Library Management System (LMS)? • LMS focus on the maintenance, development and control of items (usually documents) in the collection • LMS support selection, ordering, acquisitions, labelling, cataloguing and circulations control of library stock • Acts as an information source on the state of the stock
Brief historical overview • Early systems development was piecemeal – some libraries developed cataloguing first, others, circulation. Co-operative systems emerged. • Current systems are “integrated”. Linked files allow changes made in one file to be seen in related files
