  1. Disability Services Transition Program Flexibility with Attendance and Assignment Deadlines Plan (Flex Plan)

  2. What is a Flex Plan? A Flex Plan is an accommodation provided to students who have disabilities that are episodic or unpredictable in nature (e.g., Epilepsy, Crohn's disease, Bipolar Disorder, Diabetes, PTSD, etc.) and may impact the student’s ability to attend class and/or complete an assignment on time.

  3. How does it work? • Each semester, students approved for the Flex Plan accommodation will receive an email from Disability Services (DS), requesting them to complete a Flex Plan Request Form. • On this form, students will indicate which of their courses they would like to use a Flex Plan in and submit that to DS afterwards. • After DS receives the form, we will email each faculty member, asking them to complete a Flex Plan on the student’s behalf within five (5) business days.

  4. How does it work? (Cont.) • After DS receives the completed Flex Plan back from the faculty member, which will indicate how much flexibility can be allowed in the course regarding absences and deadline extensions, DS will review the plan. • If the plan is considered reasonable, DS will email a copy to both the student and faculty member. Students will have two (2) business days to let DS know if they have any concerns with it. If not, we will presume the plan is confirmed and will be implemented at that time.

  5. What happens after that? • Unlike other accommodations, such as extended time or a distraction reduced environment for testing (i.e., accommodations that are used on a regular basis), the Flex Plan is only used if and when the student has a disability-related emergency that impacts class attendance or completing an assignment on time.

  6. What happens after that? (Cont.) • If the student does experience a disability-related issue that impacts either area, they are expected to communicate that issue (without disclosing personal details) to the faculty member and move forward, based on what was agreed upon in the Flex Plan. • If there are any outstanding issues that cannot be resolved through the Flex Plan, the student is expected to communicate that issue with their assigned Access Coordinator, who can provide further guidance and support.
