The Beacon School 2 – San Francisco Jones architects and co.
Plan Our plan is to build a second Beacon School in San Francisco, America, due to popular demand from American visitors to the school. We are beginning to raise the substantial but worthwhile funds to build this, but in the meantime, this presentation should clarify any questions.
Location The locations we have chosen to build the school in has been chosen to minimiseearthquake risk, to be at a central location, and to be near to the university. There is extensive green space nearby, due to the Mt. Sutro Forest, so this means that there will be good space for playing fields. x x
Artists impression The art department have done some rough sketchup drawings of what some of the buildings in the school could look like. We have designed these with earthquakes in mind, with strong structures, deep foundations, and single storeys.
Art/DT This also will contain ample green space, and more classrooms, with state of the art dt/art facilities, including a metslwork and sculpting studio, 3d printers, laser cutters and the latest design software such as GIMP, photoshop, prodesktop, 2d design and sketchup
Administration complex This will contain a lot of office space along with computer server housing, and offices for senior staff.
Coach/car park The coach and car park will be relatively small to encourage walking, and will have a new bus stop outside for the pupils that come on public transport. It will have very strong foundations, and lots of exits, so it is easy to get out.
Main classroom complex This will provide classroom space for over 400 boys, with computer docks in every classroom (the boys will be given their own Macbook Pros so that time is not lost in logging on.
Indoor/outdoor swimming pool complex The swimming pool complex will be made out of varnished pine/cedar wood. The non-rectangular building is a changing complex. Again, these are earthquake proof.
American football pitch Here is an example of one of the 5 American football pitches on site. They would have advanced foundations, to prevent casualty.
Performing arts/music complex The performing arts complex will consist of a theatre with a sliding roof, for open air performances. In the music department, there will be space for an orchestra, a music tech suite, a recording studio, and in the intersection, there will be a lobby for drinks during performances.
Dining hall The dining hall will consist of two kitchen areas, (see smaller buildings), and one serving area, for 450 boys.
Assembly hall The assembly hall will also have a retractable roof, with transmission equipment, and screens all around for videos. The hexagonal shape and tiered seating ensures that every boy has a good view.
Astroturf/tennis courts The astroturfwill also be completely earthquake proof and be usable in all weathers. It would have a water irrigation system, into which unwanted water could run off and be used to shockproof the astro, with the astro using the water to absorb shock-waves. It would be equipped with floodlights, for evening play, and emergencies.
Sports hall/complex The sports complex will have facilities for gymnastics and basketball, as well as many other sports. It would also be completely earthquake proof, and contain a sports office.
Library The library will be made mostly of pine/cedar wood, and have extra strong foundations. It will have a reference library, with archives, IT facilities, and of course, what we hope will be one of he largest fiction/non-fiction libraries in the area.

Environment The Beacon school 2, being a school of the future, will try to be as environmentally friendly as possible much of its energy will be solar, its food will be locally sourced, and we will try to keep as much green space as possible. We are working towards this goal with the planning department of San Francisco city council.
Earthquake/emergency policy As the school will be in San Francisco, which of course is on the San Andreas fault, there has to be a comprehensive, clear and well thought out earthquake policy the 2 locations we have chosen reflect this policy, with minimal earthquake risk, and with it,
liquefaction. However, if an earthquake does happen, we have ensured that minimal damage to people and property occurs. All of our buildings are single storey and a strong shape, with deep foundations, made out of the strongest alloys such as Tungsten we aim to use base isolation techniques in all the buildings, so that they can move WITH the shockwaves. Twice a term,
the school will have an earthquake drill, and at the start of every year, the earthquake procedures will be revised. Teachers will receive special training, and the school will appoint an earthquake marshal. There will be first aid kits and survival food and equipment in every building, and the school will be directly linked to the emergency services, with radio distress beacons located throughout the school. There will also be emergency generators, with staff trained in using them. The same applies to fire.
Lockdown and security The school will also have an emergency lockdown procedure, in the case of the school having an intruder. Teachers will also be trained on this. All mobiles and electronic devices will be turned off, and lights off. Steel shutters and fire doors will close, and the appointed person in charge will notify the emergency services. If possible, the register will be done, to check that all pupils are there.
The central offices will notify whether the lockdown is a code: red (bomb or terrorist threat), yellow (intruder), green (gas leak etc) or blue (phone threat). The school, as said before, will have a complex security system with automatic (but they can be activated manually), fire doors and steel shutters, and security cameras. It will also have SmartWater® systems, in the event of a robbery, so the criminal can be identified.
Summary We hope for the Beacon school 2 to become the best school in the whole of San Francisco, with state of the art facilities, ultra safe buildings, and an environmentally friendly ethos. Construction will hopefully begin in 2015, and the first pupils will enter in 2017.
