The R2E Mandate Short-Term Inventory Prioritization Testing Monitoring Mid-Term Coordination Long-Term • The R2E Study Group forms a small committee consisting of experts in the various fields related to electronics damage and shall drive other working groups (RADWG). This way the R2E assists LHC operations and equipment groups with expert knowledge and assessments of radiation-induced failures in electronics of the accelerator, as well as directly coordinates studies of remedial actions: • Immediate • propose and evaluate short-term measures to reduce failure risks • conduct simulations studies to evaluate radiation fields • establish, extend and evaluate the inventory of information needed to assess radiation-induced electronics failures • ensure accurate monitoring of radiation fields in critical areas to evaluate risks of electronics failures • advice on planned CNGS irradiation tests, including calculations • commission and evaluate machine studies to understand the possibility of reducing/displacing losses • Long-Term • coordinate studies of radiation-induced failures, including calculations and proposals of solutions, and complement the inventory with measured data and experience gained during operation • advice on further dedicated irradiation tests, including calculations • assist LHC operations and concerned groups in the identification and short-term mitigation of failures R2E Status Report

Current R2E Main Objectives • short-term: minimize the risk of radiation induced electronics failures • perform possible relocations (within shutdown constraints) • install additional shielding • improve monitoring to prepare analysis for early operation • mid-term: operational experience and towards a complete solution • prepare (plan for) additional shielding • preparations of early relocations (in case time slots become available or urgent requirements) • finalize equipment inventory • prepare integration studies (full relocations, alternative solutions) • long-term: implement subsequently the chosen solution, new policy and continuous follow-up • based on early measurements, decision/integration on long-term solution R2E Status Report

Monitoring Improvements • Point-Inspections and review of monitor locations • Additional RadMon calibration measurements and extension of response analysis to low- and intermediate-neutron energies • calibration experiment at CERF for mixed fields calibration • additional measurement proposal at PTB (including funding through EFNUDAT), Prague (low-energy neutrons) and possible at 14MeV • Passive detectors (TLD monitors) installed in LHC to allow for early monitoring even at low radiation levels • more than 200 samples (RP locations, RadMons, R2E specific) • Relocation of some RadMons in LHC in order to increase statistics and allow for early extrapolation of measured values for critical areas • Voltage setting change of RadMons in DS in order to optimise the possible analysis (ARC remains unchanged) • Combined Monitoring Tool for offline analysis, first beta-version will be available for injection tests end of October • New RadMon Developments • Battery driven RadMon (soon ready) • Next Generation (internal workshop to be held October 27th) R2E Status Report

Furthermore… • R2E Radiation school (see program and summary) • Jointly organised with PH-ESE, 2-3 June: ~55 participants, 16 lecturers • Very good feedback, intensifies exchange between experiments and the machine • Power-Converters: • Internal discussion to evaluate future strategy • Strong constraints in terms of what can be done • Summary document available (see link) • WIC Failure during TI8 Injection Test • WIC failure observed in June (stopped CNGS and LHC Injection) • Immediate analysis of available measurement data • FLUKA simulations to estimate respective radiation levels • Detailed review of WIC layout and available test measurements • Analysis confirmed that the failure was very unlikely • Foreseen WIC relocation (only one rack is concerned) to location upstream the injection line collimator, urgency to be defined following next (last) injection tests • During the last TI2/8 test about 4x1013 protons were ‘dumped’ on the upstream collimator -> no WIC failure observed -> still to be relocated when time R2E Status Report

Conclusions • A brief overview of the ongoing R2E related work • Numerous mitigation actions and other improvements were directly followed through R2E with a focus on possible short-term actions (some mid/long-term parts had to be put on hold) • Important inter-departmental effort to get as far as possible • Stringent time constraints, it will not be enough to do things ‘sequentially’ (i.e., first observe and then react) • Parallel work required (we started in this direction) • Required resources will not decrease but rather… • We have the feeling of gone a good step forward, but… • Continued support required from various key contributors (Planning and Integration, Point-Owners, FLUKA Team, RadMon Team, RP, RadWG,…) • Early operation will be an important input • Many Thanks to Everybody R2E Status Report
