  1. John 5:25–32 25“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26“For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. 28“Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. 30“I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 31“If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. 32“There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true. NASB

  2. John 5:25–32 25Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. 30I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. 31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. 32There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. KJV

  3. I. The First Dead A. The Spiritual Dead

  4. I. The First Dead A. The Spiritual Dead 1. ……will hear

  5. Isaiah 55:3 3“Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, According to the faithful mercies shown to David. Matthew 13:9 9“He who has ears, let him hear.”

  6. I. The First Dead A. The Spiritual Dead 1. ……will hear 2. ……will live

  7. Ephesians 2:1–3 1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

  8. Romans 10:9–10 9that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

  9. I. The First Dead A. The Spiritual Dead B. The Power of Life

  10. Genesis 1:1 1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. John 1:1–4 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.

  11. This verse explains how it is that the Son can exercise divine judgment and generate resurrection life by his powerful word. It is because, like God, he has life-in-himself. God is self existent; he is always ‘the living God’. Mere human beings are derived creatures; our life comes from God, and he can remove it as easily as he gave it. But to the Son, and to the Son alone, God has imparted life-in-himself. That is why the Son himself can be proclaimed as ‘the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us’……it is this eternal impartation of life-in-himself to the Son that grounds his authority and power to call the dead to life by his powerful word.

  12. II. The Second Dead A. The Physical Dead

  13. II. The Second Dead A. The Physical Dead 1. Will hear the Son of Man’s voice 2. Will come forth

  14. John 11:43 43When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.”

  15. II. The Second Dead A. The Physical Dead B. The Judgment

  16. Romans 14:9–12 9For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall give praise to God.” 12So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

  17. II. The Second Dead A. The Physical Dead B. The Judgment C. The Destiny

  18. Daniel 12:2 2“Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.

  19. II. The Second Dead A. The Physical Dead B. The Judgment C. The Destiny 1. Resurrection of Life

  20. 1 Corinthians 15:20–22 20But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 21For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. 2 Corinthians 5:10 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

  21. II. The Second Dead A. The Physical Dead B. The Judgment C. The Destiny 1. Resurrection of Life 2. Resurrection of Judgment

  22. Revelation 20:11–13 11Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.

  23. Notably the division will take place on the basis of what people have done. Because believing often proves superficial, a person is to be judged by what he or she does, not merely says. This does not amount to salvation by works; rather; the life one lives forms the test of faith they profess.

  24. While works do not save, they do provide the basis for divine judgment. Scripture teaches that God judges people based on their deeds, because those deeds manifest the condition of the heart.

  25. III. True and Just Judgment A. Based on the Father’s Will B. Based upon True Testimony

  26. Deuteronomy 19:15 15“A single witness shall not rise up against a man on account of any iniquity or any sin which he has committed; on the evidence of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed.

  27. Response Are you hearing the call of Christ, calling you back from the dead? __________ come forth!

  28. John 5:24 24“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

  29. Response Are you hearing the call of Christ, calling you back from the dead? __________ come forth! Do you believe what God says? Jesus must be Lord of your life (confession). You must believe that God raised him from the dead, otherwise you are not saved. (faith)
