14. This verse explains how it is that the Son can exercise divine judgment and generate resurrection life by his powerful word. It is because, like God, he has life-in-himself. God is self existent; he is always ‘the living God’. Mere human beings are derived creatures; our life comes from God, and he can remove it as easily as he gave it. But to the Son, and to the Son alone, God has imparted life-in-himself. That is why the Son himself can be proclaimed as ‘the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us’……it is this eternal impartation of life-in-himself to the Son that grounds his authority and power to call the dead to life by his powerful word.

Revelation 20:11–13 11Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.

27. Notably the division will take place on the basis of what people have done. Because believing often proves superficial, a person is to be judged by what he or she does, not merely says. This does not amount to salvation by works; rather; the life one lives forms the test of faith they profess.

28. While works do not save, they do provide the basis for divine judgment. Scripture teaches that God judges people based on their deeds, because those deeds manifest the condition of the heart.
