  2. Session Objectives To share & discuss with participants • NC’s Partnership with CSEFEL (Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning) • NC/CSEFEL Planning Team efforts to implement, sustain, & grow • Challenges & lessons learned

  3. Center on the Social & Emotional Foundations for Early Learning • Collaboration of 6 universities & research institutes • Federally funded by Office of Head Start & Child Care Bureau • National center to promote social emotional development & school readiness of children birth to age 5

  4. Purpose of CSEFEL • Analyze & synthesize research translate into practical materials • Disseminate practices & materials via interactive website • Engage in training & technical assistance to selected states

  7. CSEFEL Grant Requirements • Develop a cadre of trainers • Create coaching capacity • Select & support Pyramid Model demonstration classrooms • Evaluate outcomes • Sustain the efforts&scale-up

Sustainability & Scale-up NC/CSEFEL Partnership Vision To develop and sustain a unified professional development system to address the emotional and social needs of all children birth-5 through the use of the Pyramid Model integrated with other relevant efforts for North Carolina’s early care and education workforce

  9. Division of Child Development & Early Education Project-Level Support • Funding for NC/CSEFEL Coordinator • Meetings, training, materials for coaches & demo site staff • Two statewide special initiatives

Division of Child Development & Early Education Project-Level Support • Infant Toddler Quality Enhancement Project &Promoting Healthy Social Behaviors in Child Care Centers • On-site Pyramid Model-based technical assistance available to any NC licensed child care program • Pyramid Model-based learning events offered statewide

  11. Division of Child Development & Early Education System-Level Efforts • Weaving Pyramid Model concepts&language into revised ELDS • Including in revised QRIS

  12. NC Head Start – State Collaboration Office • Brokered agreement (based on coaching model) with PFI & 3 Head Start grantees to build capacity & sustain the initiative

  13. East Coast Migrant Head Start • Pre-service training for teachers • Ongoing training, technical assistance & support throughout work season • Systematic use of TPOT & TPITOS in subset of classrooms

  14. NC Partnership for Children • Webinar for Smart Start Partnership executive directors & program staff • Strongly encourage programming & activities that incorporate the Pyramid Model at the local level

  15. NC Dept of Public Instruction/ Office of Early Learning • Training & external coaching in 9 inclusive pre-K classrooms • Development of local Leadership Teams • 3-5 year plan for program-wide implementation

  16. NC Division of Public Health • 5 bulletins highlighting Pyramid Model sent to all licensed child care programs • Professional development opportunities for Early Intervention staff • CSEFEL information disseminated through Local Interagency Coordinating Councils

  17. FPG Child Development Institute Partnerships for Inclusion • Trainings for early care & education teachers & administrators • Train-the-trainer materials

  18. FPG Child Development Institute NC Technical Assistance Preschool Project • Program-wide implementation for 13 local school districts • Coaching for demonstration classroom

  19. Community College System • Training for early childhood faculty • Embedding concepts into child guidance classes & other early childhood courses

  20. Grassroots Efforts • NC/CSEFEL Training & Technical Assistance Community (>500) • Local Peer-amid Discussion Groups for consultants/trainers

  21. Challenges • Competing priorities for partner agency leadership • Cross sector implementation became individual agency efforts • Lack of drivers for systemic implementation of the CSEFEL Pyramid Model

  22. Challenges • Lack of public awareness of CSEFEL Pyramid Model • Lack of state-wide access to train-the-trainer • Turnover within demonstration sites
