  6. Workplace Health & Safety In Queensland the Workplace Health & Safety Act 1995 and Regulations 1997, legislate our requirements for workplace safety. SkillsTech Australia has a Workplace Health & Safety policy designed to protect students whilst on any Institute site or engaged in Institute activities.

  7. Workplace Health & Safety Accident Procedure All accidents must be reported within 3 days to your teacher/tutor or campus workplace health & safety officer. You should then complete a work injury report form EV010, your teacher will be able to access this form on the intranet for you. This form is then forwarded to the appropriate portfolio manager.

  8. Workplace Health & Safety First Aid If you require first aid, there are trained first aid officers on campus that will attend to any minor injuries. These officer can be contacted through any staff member. If deemed necessary, an ambulance will be called to assist you.

Workplace Health & Safety Fire and Emergency Evacuation Evacuation – When fire alarm is activated, move calmly to assembly point Lockdown – When lockdown procedure is initiated NO ALARM – remain or return to classrooms immediately, follow all instructions given by the workplace health & safety officer.

Workplace Health & Safety Other Rules & Regulations Harassment/Bullying Any form of discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, age, marital or parental status is illegal under the Queensland Anti Discrimination Act 1991 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005. SkillsTech Australia WILL NOT tolerate discrimination, harassment, bullying of any kind and will take the appropriate action as per the Student Rules. Student who have any concerns should discuss their options with a Harassment Referral Officer (HRO) or Student Counsellor on their campus

  12. Workplace Health & Safety Other Rules and Regulations Smoking The State Government has a NO SMOKING policy (find policy) in all buildings and government vehicles. This include any awnings attached to buildings and is also prohibited within 4 metres of an entrance to a building Smoking is prohibited in any area that serves food. Please use signed designated areas on your campus and dispose of cigarette butts in ashtrays provided.

  13. Workplace Health & Safety Other Rules and Regulations Drugs and Alcohol It is an offence to buy, sell or use prohibited drugs and alcohol or carry prohibited illegal implements on campus. By law any drug offence is automatically reported to the police Medication must be authorised by a doctor and legally purchased from a pharmacy. Please advise teacher if you need to take medication while at the Institute. Please note that pain relief tablets or ventolin puffers will not be issued by staff.

  14. Workplace Health & Safety Other Rules and Regulations Vehicles – Dangerous driving and illegal parking are not acceptable, and will be reported to the Director and/or police. Bikes/Skateboards /Scooters and Skates – Not to be ridden on any campus Mobile Phones – Mobile phones are to be switched off whilst in class. Dress Standards – Must be respectable and non-offensive and appropriate to your trade area. This includes footwear (bare feet or thongs are not permitted), personal protective equipment if required or instructed by teacher.

  15. Workplace Health & Safety Other Rules and Regulations Eating and Drinking in Classrooms – For hygiene reasons, eating or drinking is not permitted in classrooms. The only persons who could be allowed are diabetics who must eat regularly. Bottled water is permitted except in computer labs. Access to Classrooms and Workshops – Students must not enter classrooms/ computer labs or workshops without a supervising teacher or tutor. Insurance – Students of the Institute are not covered by insurance of any type whilst on campus except for the following circumstances: • Apprentices are covered by their employer’s work cover policy. • Work experience, industry placement and vocational placement students are insured against permanent partial disability and property damage providing the appropriate documentation has been completed. Note: private property or vehicles are not covered by departmental insurance. This the individual’s responsibility.

General Induction Student Services Career and Personal Counselling Student counsellors are available across the institute to assist students with the following: • Course/career and vocational counselling • Short term counselling for personal issues relating to your study • Options for students experiencing financial difficulties • Interaction with institute staff on behalf of students • Advise about services available in the community Please contact Student Services at your campus for more information.

  18. General Induction Student Services Disability Support Services The Disability Support Officers assist students with disabilities to be integrated into vocational programs. This includes: • Assisting students with specific requirements • Liaising on behalf of students with teachers so that there is an understanding and accommodation of students’ needs. • Locating and organising equipment and specialist personnel as required upon assessment • Provide direct support to both students and teachers in the classroom situation.   19. General Induction Student Services Learning Support Learning support provides assistance to students who require help with their studies. Some ways assistance is provided: • Maths support with any trade area • Study skills • Reading work books • Using computers • Interpreting assignments and work modules • Brainstorming for ideas • Planning skills For further information please contact Student Services on your campus

General Induction Educational Matters Access & Equity – SkillsTech Australia promotes an environment which is fair and equitable and free from discrimination and intolerance and is committed to the principles of Social Justice Academic/Disciplinary Appeals – Students who are dissatisfied with academic decisions, procedures or any issues that directly relate to the successful completion of their program, may take their complaint to their teacher within two weeks of receiving their grades. If you are not satisfied with the outcome you will need to lodge a ‘Notice of Appeal’ to the Director. The Institute has systems and processes in place to manage and deal with any disciplinary matters or instances of misconduct. For further information refer to TAFE Qld Student Rules (copies are available From the campus libraries and TAFE internet)

General Induction Educational Matters Student ID Cards • All students are required to have a student ID card, which must be carried at all times during their study at SkillsTech Australia. • Students will need ID card when borrowing resources from the campus libraries • Student Cards are available from the Customer Service Centre at time of enrolment. An additional cost is incurred for this card.

  24. Educational Matters Complaints– If you have a concern regarding any aspect of your program, please discuss it with your teacher so that assistance can be provided as quickly as possible. If you are uncertain how to approach an issue please contact the Student Counsellor on your campus. Student Rules – Whilst studying at SkillsTech Australia, students are required to adhere to both TAFE Qld student rules and SkillsTech Australia rules and regulations. These are available in the TAFE Qld Student Rules and Institute Policy Documents, and can be accessed through the Customer Information Centres/Learning Service Centre/or the Internet

  25. General Induction Educational Matters Attendance – Students are expected to attend classes regularly. If absence from class you need to: • Contact your teaching staff. If you are an apprentice/trainee, your employer will be notified of your absences. • If absence during assessment you will need to present a doctors certificate on your return to TAFE. • If you are an Education and Training Reforms for the Future (ETRF)/School based Apprentice/trainee, your school will be notified of all absences. Attendance is a Visa requirement for International students any breaches will reported to DIMA.

Educational Matters Privacy – Personal information collected as a result of your enrolment will be used by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts for: • General student administration • vocational education and training administration and regulation • Departmental planning, reporting, communication, research evaluation, auditing and marketing • Only authorised departmental officers have access to this information. No further access to your enrolment information will be provided to any other organisation or persons without your consent or, unless authorised or required by law, in accordance with Information Privacy Principles in Information Standard 42.

General Induction Information & Other Services Library – Libraries are located on each SkillsTech campus and some of the services provided are: • Library induction to all new students • Texts and accompanying materials to support courses • Videos, magazines, CDs, daily newspapers and fiction • Access to computers and training in software applications • Access to the internet • Photocoping services Check library opening hours on your campus.

General Induction Information & Services Provided Canteen facilities – available on all campuses Parking – Free parking is available and is at the students’ own risk Security – available on all campuses Lost property – All lost property is delivered to the Customer Service Centre on your campus Messages – Messages can not be taken for individual students except in emergency situations Bookshop – Student textbooks can be purchased through the independent bookshops located at Bracken Ridge, Alexander Hills, Logan, Mt Gravatt and Yeronga. Disabled Facilities – Each campus provides disabled access and disabled parking. Please contact the Disability Support Officer for further information.

General Induction Enrolment Information Fees/Charges All fees are due and payable prior to commencement of study Payment of Fees • Payment options – Cash, cheque, money order, eftpos and credit card • Fees paid in full – note: there is a $26.50 enrolment fee that is to be paid • Standard Time to Pay - Fees must be greater than $75 - Deposit = ½ material fees + 20% excludes ID and utility charges - Repayments – weekly, fortnightly, monthly • Non-standard Time to Pay - If you have difficulty paying fees, prior to commencement of class contact the Student Counselor on your campus for assistance. If you are a concession holder please present your card when paying your fees. If you require further information on obtaining a concession card please contact Centrelink.

General Induction Enrolment Information Fees & Charges Enrolment Conditions Access to all classes is subject to: • Sufficient enrolments in the class • Pre-requisites and other entry requirements being met • Enrolment fees finalised Your enrolment may be refused if you have either outstanding fees or an overdue debt

General Induction Enrolment Information/Fees & Charges Refunds • No refunds after the start of study • Refunds on medical grounds considered on an individual basis but may forfeit material fees • $10 Administration Fee (minimum) • Refund application form available at all Customer Information Centre or see the Counsellor on your campus
