Lighting Control Equipment • Lighting control board (system)- controls the operation and intensity of lighting instruments • Computerized systems- info. is stored on a disk or CD from the system
Headset- allows communication between the light board operator and the stage crew (complex, radio, battery)
Instruments • Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlight (ERS)- strong, focused bean, also called a Leko
Fresnel Spotlight- shorter throws covering a large area, soft, diffuse light
Followspot- throws bright, focused light on a moving performer
Ellipsoidal Reflector Floodlight/Scoop- illuminates large areas of the stage
Strip/Border Lights- washing lights over a large area of the stage or onto scenery
Lamps • Incandescent • Standard lamps • Used in strip lights, floodlights, wall sources • Wattage varies • Halogen • Energy-efficient, high intensity lamps • Used in spotlights, • Wattage varies
Accessories • Gels- color filters that cast colored lights from a spotlight • Gelframes- holds the gels • Gobos/cookies- metallic disks with cut patterns for casting light patterns from a spotlight
Tophats - narrows the beam of a spotlight • Barndoors- folding flaps on a metal frame that shapes the beam of the light • Plano-convex, step, and fresnel lenses- used for spotlights
Electrical & Rigging Supplies • Male/female Connectors • Twofers, triples • Electrical cable • Wire strippers • Wire crimpers • 9-volt batteries • Electrical tape & duct tape • Safety chains
Lighting continued • Throw- the distance of the light beam • Dimmer- electrical device that controls the brightness of the lighting instruments • One can control more than one light • Hang- attach to a batten • Batten- metal pipe where most lights are hung
Followspots are mounted on a wheeled light stand and positioned in a balcony or the light booth • Each light is connected to the system by an electrical cable that runs from the instrument to a stage outlet • Standard is 2 feet long
Parts of a Lighting Instrument • Lamp- source of the light • Reflector- reflects the light • Lens- shapes the light • Metal Housing- encloses the system
