  2. Mixed emotions for students and parents Lots of ANXIETY Don’t ask “Is college X a good college”; ask “Is X a good college for my student?” WHAT you do in college is a better predictor of future happiness and success than WHERE you go to college! Senior year means . . .

Put in your application what is asked for. • Plan ahead and know your deadlines: • Give 2-3 weeks for your counselor/teacher to write a letter of recommendation. • The Common Application (required by many schools) includes a Counselor Component – need to give us up to 2 weeks to complete!   13. Apply online at: www.fafsa.ed.gov Create a PIN (personal identification number) before Jan 1. File your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) after January 1st. Use your previous year’s tax return info and then update later File early! More aid is available earlier in the year. College Bound Scholarship FAFSA deadline is Feb. 1st Many school scholarships have a FAFSA priority deadline of Feb. 1st. Financial Aid

  15. Annual tuition at a community college for 2013-2014: $4,000 (full-time, 3 quarters) Want smaller classes? Complete an AA degree then transfer Interested in a specialized degree? (nursing, computer programming, aviation, etc.) Don’t have the core classes needed for a four-year university – or the GPA? Benefits of a Community College

  16. Excellent for pursuing a vocation immediately out of high school • Make a visit to the programs you’re interested in • Apply for programs early: January of Senior is encouraged • Just about every program this year had a waitlist Technical Colleges

  17. 1. Visit websites and look under “Admissions” or “Prospective students”. Start applying Jan. of Sr. Year. 2. Find out what is required – application fee? Transcript? Compass test? Usually you will complete the application, pay the fee, take a Compass test, then register for classes. No SAT or ACT is required. 3. Submit application and fee, then schedule Compass test. You’re ready to register! Community and technical colleges – how to apply:

Sept: Register for SAT/ACT Oct/Nov: SAT/ACT fall testing Request recommendation letters (Common App.) Dec: Complete college applications: Earliest deadline in WA state is Dec. 1 (UW-Seattle) Jan 1st: Complete the FAFSA ASAP! Feb. 1: College Bound Scholarship FAFSA deadline; many university scholarship deadlines! Feb: Work on scholarships Mar: Schools mail out acceptance letters Apr: Decide on your school & arrange housing May/June: Work with your school on your financial aid package Summary timeline
