  2. Trouble in Boston • British officials become nervous. • 1768 – Sent two regiments of soldiers. • Called the redcoats. • Camped in the center of Boston. • Colonists become angrier. • Soldiers treated the colonists poorly and even took some of their jobs.

  3. Trouble in Boston • The Boston Massacre • March 5, 1770 • The people are calling them names and throwing things at the soldiers. • “You dare not fire.” • Soldier falls accidentally firing and 5 colonists were killed.

  4. Trouble in Boston • The Word Spreads • Colonial leaders spread propaganda. • They use terms like, “innocent colonists” and “bloodthirsty redcoats.” • Paul Revere made silver engravings of the incident. • More boycotts. • Townshends Acts are repealed except tea.

  5. Trouble in Boston • The Word Spreads • Glad that taxes are removed but continue to boycott tea. • Samuel Adams revives the Committees of Correspondence.

  6. A Crisis Over Tea • The colonists thought the British is limiting there rights. • They passed the Tea Act. • They didn’t have to pay taxes for tea. Its just a tea company. • They buy tea from people that are smuggling it.

A Crisis Over Tea • Colonial Demands • There was another boycott on British goods. • The colonists vowed to stop east India ships to stop unloading. • Rather than part with freedom “We will part with our tea”. • Britain ignores this. • But colonists force the ships to turn around and leave. Except in Boston.

  8. A Crisis Over Tea • The Boston Tea Party • The sons of Liberty • They dressed up like Mohawk Indians. • They threw 342 boxes of tea into the Boston Harbor. • The colonists still think of them self as British.

A Crisis Over Tea • The Intolerable Acts • King George vows to punish Boston. • He knows he has to make a choice. • They passed the Coercive Act. - They close the Boston Harbor - They take away rights of Massachusetts - They force soldiers to take shelter in their own homes. - Ban town meetings. • They passed the Quebec Act. - They give their own government and religious freedom to the Canadians.
